Problem Solving Skills

  • Aug. 31st, 2007 at 11:16 AM

If you're bored, put your thinking caps on and check these out:

Problem #1

Using the numbers 1-9, fill in the circles of the triangle so that each side equals 17. You can only use each number once, and you must use them all. Note: There is more than one answer.

Problem #2

Using the numbers 1-19, fill in the circles so that every diameter, including the center circle, (marked in colors) equals the same number. You must use every number, and cannot repeat.

Problem #3:
Using an eight-minute hour glass and a five-minute hour glass, how can you measure one minute?

Problem #4:
The product of two adjacent pages in a book is 6162, what two pages is the book opened on?

Yes, I realize it’s been awhile since I’ve posted anything here, but I am going to try and keep it updated at least every once in awhile. That is my goal. To keep up with this thing. Now that school has started, it seems hard to find the time to post my thoughts. It’s been such a whirl wind of activity since I got back from Germany! Meh, who knows what’s going to happen?

So let me give you a synopsis of some of the more recent events that have occurred in my life- some which deserve mention just because they made me smile:

1)      While walking down Broadway to go to lunch, I was catcalled by a passing truck. It made me laugh, especially when they stuck a thumbs up out their window. Hehe.
2)      I was caught singing “Baby, It’s You” by the Beatles while I was driving. Right in the middle of the shala la la part. You know it. Anyways, the truck next to me had two people in it- the driver and the passenger- both guys. I passed them, but then they sped up to drive along side and were waving and what not. It was pretty funny- I just grinned and waved back. Went back to singing too ;)
3)      I’ve been listening to Please, Please Me by the Beatles (I’m on a real Beatles kick right now). I have a goal to own all of their cds by next year- if not sooner- but I want to spend at least two-weeks with each CD. I am also buying them according to their release date, so I get a taste for their developing style! It’s exciting. I wasn’t too impressed with the CD at first, but oh, it’s grown on me! I find myself humming the melodies… getting them stuck in my head. And who doesn’t love rocking out to Twist and Shout in their car? I know I do. Anyways, I have a special case for my Beatles collection (3 cds so far- Love (so fantastic), Please, Please Me, and With the Beatles).
4)      My laptop situation is crazy- but I cheated the system. As you may remember, I had some dissatisfaction with my laptop while I was in Germany. So I decided to buy a new one before school started. I looked at the Apples, and I really was not impressed. So I went to Best Buy and fell in love with a Gateway there. And so I bought it after a few days of researching.
Well… I got it to school, all excited to get it up and running and connected to the internet. Of course, I was to be disappointed. My laptop- the only laptop in this situation- would not recognize the school’s encryption code to get onto the wireless system. Thus, the lovely machine was suddenly of no value to me. I need the internet so I can use it at school. … Suspecting that something may be wrong with it, I took it up to Best Buy where the guy that sold it to me was very helpful in trying to figure out the problem.

But the problem was nonexistent there (of course!). But they let me trade it in for another computer, a Toshiba this time—15.4 inch screen. And I didn’t really want it. But if I just asked for my money back on the Gateway, I’d have to pay a 15% restocking fee since the box had been opened and the contents explored. Shitty deal.

So I took the Toshiba I didn’t want back home, and left it sitting on my floor.  I decided that I would figure out a way to get all my money back. After all, I’d need it if I wanted to have a new laptop for school. So I took it back to another Best Buy a few days ago, still sealed in the box, and asked to return it. Some difficulties occurred with recrediting my account, but it all worked out in the end- and I didn’t have to pay a restocking fee. ;) ;) I cheat. I win.
5)      Speaking of games! I created a little set for the game Liar’s Dice/Pirate’s Dice. You’ll see it out on the shelves of Walmart or wherever you shop—w/ Pirates of the Caribbean affiliation. I did not want their set of manufactured plastic cups and overpriced dice. I decided I wanted to make my own set. So I bought a wooden treasure chest, stained it the color of wood, found some cardboard containers that would serve as cups and painted them brown with wood detailing, and some little wooden blocks for the dice. I plan to write down the rules (copied from the Pirate’s Dice instructions that my cousin Jacob has) on a scroll. Heh. It’s pretty awesome. It turned out more expensive than buying the set from Disney, but hey- mine looks cooler. Fun Game. Check it out.
6)      And on the subject of more games- I’ve decided that next summer, when I’m old enough to drink, I will be going to Vegas. Yup. It’s gonna be awesome and I’m going to go see Love. Love! =D
7)      Food. I’ve been cooking lately from that cookbook I bought. I’ve made schnitzel with German potato salad (yum!), maultaschen, and sour cherry crumble cake. They have all turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself ;). Maultaschen was a hit with everyone except for my mom, since she doesn’t like spinach. But they are essentially raviolis stuffed with spinach, and I made a mushroom sauce for it that also had browned meat in it. ;) It rocked my world, and tasted great as leftovers the next day. Unfortunately, they took me three hours to make, and I was exhausted afterwards!! And the sour cherry crumble cake was pretty good too. It was gone within three days, I think. I’ve been spreading my culinary wings, and it feels good- to the soul and to the stomach. =P
8)      Watching the first season of Ugly Betty with my mom and grandma. I hadn’t realized how much I just missed sitting and laughing with them. I love being home… I’m pretty sure I have the best family in the world. =) Oh, and the movie Hot Fuzz had me twittering the entire way through.
    >>>>sidenote: I had to have my car battery replaced. The Cheat is happy.
9)      The last thing I wanted to mention in the ways of smiles is what happens when I go to the Starbucks at the Quarry. I am extremely loyal to this location when it comes to picking a place for my morning beverage. Chai lattes w/ soy, Chai frapuccinos, passion tea, and the occasional fruit juice blend… But I don’t like coffee.
On with the story. So after I got back from Germany I set out to find a top like the one I wore with my new plaid skirt- so I went to New York & Company and found one exactly like Sarah’s, except it was in black! Oh, it’s my new favorite top now! =D But it looks fantastic with my skirt- and I bought new shoes for it too- heels that don’t hurt my feet! And I went to Starbucks last Friday just to show myself off (yeah, I’m a little superficial like that ;) but I can admit it). It was fun. I found out that one of the guys still remembers my name after 2-3 months of not being there. =D And of course Tomas was there too. So it was nice getting to say hello to him. =)

So I went again this morning (it being Friday!) and Felix was there. Felix isn’t his real name, but the one that Chelsea and I gave him when we first met him- being too timid to ask for his real one. But I know that now too! Anyways, I walked in, at first a bit disheartened that he wasn’t around in plain view—and then I heard his voice over at the place where they make the drinks and I got a big grin. I love familiarity. I love liking someone and knowing it won’t go anywhere. =)

But anyways, I forgot to ask for soy in my chai latte this morning, and I realized it too late. So I resolved to deal with my non-soy chai latte, only to watch in amazement as Felix added the soy milk to the cup instead of the regular! He remembered that I liked soy! Without it even being on the cup! And without paying for it! =O!! Hehe. It made me feel all bubbly. I know I’m a silly girl, but just let me be happy with that little whatever it is. ;) I chatted a tiny bit with him and then headed out to work, happy as a lark. Singing Twist and Shout as I drove—twisting and shouting as well. Don’t tell my insurance company ;) =P

                        I heart ppl today.

So that’s enough with the smiles. Now let’s get down to updating about my school load this semester.

I’m taking six classes- the most I’ve ever done. Eighteen hours. Yes. It sucks. =P My A-day schedule is wonderful though- one at 8 in the morning, another at 3 in the afternoon, so I have plenty of time between to work a bit. B-days are another story. I get to school at 9, and don’t get to leave until 4:30. A full day of classes. Sucks sucks sucks. Heh.

This is what I’m taking:

-Emergent Literacy: A class on how to teach young children (Pre-K through 2nd) how to read. My instructor is absolutely wonderful. She is the most amazing woman I have met on the faculty as of now- she is so enthusiastic about her job, and makes getting up before the crack of dawn worth it. The classroom is very welcoming, and she is sincerely excited to be there every day. I want to be that way… to show joy and spread joy to those I encounter. She is an inspiration. =)

-The Religious Quest: This class is all about exploring man’s search for meaning and how we as a people approach the mysteries of life. We are mostly discussing the topics from an anthropological view point, which is really cool. I love Religious Studies, it is by far one of the most interesting subjects I’ve ever studied- I want to minor in it somehow.

-Science for the Elementary School Teacher- This class is taught by a local celebrity! Alex Garcia, the weatherman. Let me give you some insight into why this is a bad thing. He loves his job as a weatherman, and he loves science to the point of fanaticism (much like my love for books and the Beatles). Why is this bad? He is a bit arrogant. He expects us to grasp these subjects right away…. And I don’t like science when I have to learn it for a grade. But I’m trying to keep a positive outlook- perhaps the things I’ve heard about him aren’t true… but they seem that way so far. Anyways. I have to take it.

-Child and Adolescent Development: Psychology. Could I just say that I took this course in High School? Is there someway to get out of it? I wasn’t impressed last year with my psychology course, and it seems like it will be more of the same this semester. Perhaps I’ll be wrong, but as of now, I’ll just get by by chatting with friends online. Luckily I have a friend in the class that took Spanish and Psych 101 with me last semester. She’s pretty funny.

-Reading, Writing, and Study Skills in the Content Area: What? Another reading course? Yes. Not as thrilled about this one, but it may prove to be interesting- if the busy work doesn’t kill me in the process. I cannot tell you how much I hate busy work. Writing papers on subjects that we thoroughly covered in class seems so pointless to me. But I did manage to write it all while I had my pedicure on Wednesday. ;)

(Note, I think that ‘Drive my car’ by the Beatles may be one of the sexiest songs I have ever heard. Hehe.)

-Math for the Elementary School Teacher: I know what you’re thinking- easy A. Adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division…. Heh. Wrong. This class is hell on earth. But I love it. Problem solving skills rock my socks off. I shall post some of them up for you to enjoy. Oh, and writing in Babylonian, Mayan, and Egyptian numerals is crazy fun. Just a bit sadistic, but hey, I dig it. Heheh.

So in a nutshell, that’s my class load. I like three out of six, so that’s half. I’ll live. I have to. =P

And I’ll leave you with just a glimpse into my good dreams last night- it was odd and fantastic:

It had to do with going to some play down at this giant movie theatre (looked much like the theatre in the Ludwigsburg schloss, now that I think of it) where a production of a Shakespeare play was going on. So that was cool- pretty normal- except the director had decided to set it back into the days of the Roman Empire (Julius Ceasar?). But the date also kept saying the 1600s in the playbill, so it didn’t make sense, but whatever. I was also sitting at a table like the one at Applebees, plus theatre seats, or long wooden benches, depending on the switching perspectives.

I think Sarah had been with me with one of her cousins- or Carlos- and I got annoyed with them so I went and paid money to go to the show… and I watched the Romans run here and there from between the stage to up in the balcony where I was. And then it got really good ;). The actors started to interact with the audience—one of the Roman centurions plopped down next to me, slung an arm around my shoulders and offered me a beer. He had gristly cheeks, and I remember this because we did a little kissing… *blush >>’*  …at my grandma’s provocation. Odd detail that I just remembered- she showed up sitting across from us at the table. And we had wooden plates and cups in front of us—and beer. She told us to kiss- so we did. It was awkward. Then the guy had to rush back down to the stage with the rest of his troupe.

But at some point I must have kicked my shoes off in the dream, and once the play was over I made to leave- went through the turnstile- and realized I was just in my socks! I needed my shoes back! So I persuaded the guy at the turnstile to let me back in without another ticket, rushed back to the benches in the balcony where I had been sitting- had to push my way through some of the actors too. I found my bench, and underneath it were piles of shoes O_o. I found my sneakers and then I also found Chelsea’s sneakers. …

Hearing the actors, I turned and looked over at them- told them that they had done such a wonderful job with the play, and that I’d really enjoyed it. Then they all swarmed around me, wanting more praise and to chat- and the guy I had made out with slipped me a note with his phone number… 412 8142 (base nine number!) or something like that… and then I left with him to go to a cemetery. There was a bunch of mist around the bottoms of the head stones- and they all looked very fake, like stage props. The guy out of costume was less impressive… not so rugged. He looked like a cross between two of the guys in Ugly Betty- Walter’s build (I hate that guy) with Santos’ looks. It was just weird. But we did ride a motorcycle.

I ended up getting chased by some weird monster until a bunch of men in kilts came and rescued me.… and then the alarm clock went off, thank God.

Hehe.

Not sure I could have taken anymore…

And that I can write anymore, either.

So I’m off for now! Talk to you all later. =)

Last day- I'm coming home!

  • Aug. 13th, 2007 at 4:28 PM

So today was my last full day in Germany- and it was very nice. Aside from packing, Oma, Sarah, Susan, and I went and got the honey I wanted to bring back from one of her friend’s named Anita. Her brother apparently has a bee farm. =) And she has great honey.

I never mentioned that it was white honey, did I?... well, it is. It happens when natural honey has sat unused for awhile. It sort of breaks down into sugars after a few months—and it is soooo good. So I’m bringing back a jar of it with my beers. Hopefully they don’t break. =/

I asked Oma in the car why there were so many garden gnomes here in Germany, and she explained that the Germans just liked their little dwarf helpers- their garten zwerge. She also told me a story about their origins. Apparently they symbolize the small boys that used to work in mines- their pointed hats are actually the sacks that they boys wore when they went down into the mineshafts. I think I’ll just prefer to think of them as mystical mischievous fairy creatures. Hehe.

Rest and Relaxation- At last!

  • Aug. 12th, 2007 at 2:48 PM

Today was wonderfully relaxing. I mean it. I woke up at 8:30, I snuck out of the room while Jesse and Sarah still slept, and I took a shower. Then I got to eat breakfast with Opa and chat with him, as I already told you.

While they went to mass, I read some of Outlander and then took a nap. It was very nice and warm under my covers. The plans for the day revolved around us going to Jesse’s home, but I wasn’t very eager to go anywhere.

So when the time came, I asked to stay home, expecting to be able to join them later when Susan went over after her walk with Sonya. But they weren’t planning to come back to pick me up, so I just asked for my leave and decided to stay home.

Train Travesty

  • Aug. 12th, 2007 at 7:07 AM

Once I again, I am ready to come home. I don’t know how the time slipped past me last night, but before I knew it, it was 1 in the morning and I hadn’t written anything about my day. So I hope you’ll forgive me again. =)

Anyways, yesterday, due to the strange insistence of everyone that we get out of the house, Sarah and I decided to go to Stuttgart with Jesse. I needed to find another copy of that cookbook for Lissa, since my plan to just buy it in the airport was turned over. Apparently we are leaving the house at 3 or 4 in the morning to catch our flight at 6 into Amsterdam. Ick. I don’t know what time that means I need to get up- or if I should bother to go to sleep at all. Anyways- the bookstore in the airport may not even be open, and I doubt that I would be able to locate the right book in a sleepy stupor.

Roman Spa!

  • Aug. 10th, 2007 at 4:46 PM

First off, I will say a quick apology for posting nothing yesterday in my blog. There was simply nothing to say aside from that Jesse, Sarah, and I played Siedler again (Settlers of Cattan). I won, but that’s about it. I read and played on the computer the rest of the day. I am so ready to come home, guys. Really….

But today was actually fun. So I shall tell you about it, yeah? Okay. Here it goes.

Susan came in and woke us up at 8- which was totally uncalled for. To us, there was no reason to be stirred from our slumber- we were only going to a Roman spa today, so why did that mean we had to get up early? She explained that because Sonya was coming with us, we needed to go in between her times to feed baby Phillip. So that meant leaving early.

Is it possible to be burned out during a vacation? Like, longing for home? I think two weeks is the perfect vacation time, and longer than that just ends up being too long- lol.

Today we slept in until 10:30, and I realized that in my sleepy stupor last night, I forgot to email Chel back. So I set to work on that before going down to breakfast. It was raining outside, and I didn't think anything of it until I was downstairs gettting ready to eat a pretzel when Sarah muttered that the opera may have been cancelled due to the weather.

And I was horrified, because I'd been hoping for just one day of relaxation, without any distractions- so I could just enjoy myself and rest. Not to be. Nope. At breakfast I was made aware that cousins were coming over to have lunch with us-- and by the time I got out of the shower (because I needed to make myself look decent)- Sonya was over with the babies.

Well, today was another early day. Sarah and I were both startled from heavy sleep by the chiming of her cell phone alarm—pleasant and annoying at the same time. At least it isn’t that horrible screeching noise like the one back home. I got dressed in the top Lissa gave to me for my birthday, along with the jewelry, and headed downstairs for my normal breakfast of jam, honey, and toast.

Sarah and I returned back upstairs to get ready in a leisurely fashion- turning on our laptops to listen to music as we did each others hair. At one point we were both playing our own songs and turning them up to drown out the other- and finally Fergie, on my laptop, won for the duration of me straightening her hair. I got to impress with my mad white rapping skills. =P

We got on the road soon enough, and I drifted off to sleep with my neck pillow. Sarah was busy reading Harry Potter. I get too carsick when I read in the car, so I had none of that. Sleep was lovely. Unfortunately, by the time I woke up, I was ready to wet myself- and not from the excitement of going to France. I had had a cup of tea at breakfast and a nice glass of water too… and I was feeling it!

A Leisurely Stroll

  • Aug. 6th, 2007 at 2:53 PM

So after a delightful breakfast this morning, I was tricked by Opa into accompanying him and Susan on a hike across some of the surrounding hills. I was told that it would be about a 5-7km walk, which isn't too bad by any standards. Nice and leisurely- mostly downhill because Oma would drive us up and we would just walk down. So I agreed, wanting to get some fresh air and let Sarah rest after a night of being sick.

Armed with my camera, I climbed into the car with my hiking companions and Oma. But Opa was driving us up. And up. And up... until Oma was exclaiming that we were 20 km away from the house, and that it would take us four hours to get back home. I began to get nervous. That's a little more than ten miles. Oma kept protesting that Susan and I weren't used to such things (and I know I'm certainly not), and finally, exasperated with arguing, asked if we had a cellphone at the very least- to call when we got tired. We did.

And that eased my worries a little- until Opa said that Oma should call in an hour, because he hadn't loaded any money onto his cellphone to make a call out with it. Oh, Lord! was all I could think. I laughed a little outloud. Nervously.

Jokingly, Oma asked if I just wanted to ride home with her, but I said no-- kinda wanting to say yes. =P But once I got out of the car, I said I was ready to go home. Hehe.

A Day of Rest- or not.

  • Aug. 5th, 2007 at 5:27 PM

Today started out wonderfully- I slept in until ten, had a delicious breakfast of black bread with honey and black currant jam (perfection), and began work on what I thought would be an easy, but time consuming, task of catch up. And after that got boring, I went and took a shower.

And then worked on this blog. Sarah braided my hair for me too...

Next came lunch- which was nothing short of wonderful. It was chicken and beef covered in a delicious brown gravy- spinach noodles- bread dumplings- and a broccoli and caulifower dish. We chatted about random things- and to my dismay, when Susan began to talk about being car sick at one point in her life, I started to feel sick too. Strange strange.

Sarah and I hoarded four bottles of Schneider-Weisse beer up here today- so we would know there would be some left to take home with us.

And then I worked on my blog some more...

At about four, we went over to Sonya's house in Goppingen for cake time. It was about a fifteen minute drive.

This morning when I woke up I was so exhausted from yesterday that I hardly felt ready or able to go to Munich, but I knew that it was an opportunity that really couldn’t be missed. So I forced myself up out of bed before I had to get up, knowing full and well that I needed to iron a shirt and my hair before our excursion today. A large group of us was going again- Sonya, Florian, and their children (Elizabeth and Philip), Katharina, Susan, myself, Sarah, Walter and Sylvia. I didn’t expect us to last much more than six hours in the city before we called it quits- so I expected a good day of it and then we’d be home…

High on Heidelberg

  • Aug. 3rd, 2007 at 3:05 PM

Before I start anything, I just want to give a big virtual shout out to Chelsea-- Happy 20th!!!! I hope today was good for you. I wish I had been there to celebrate, but we will totally do something when I get home. Like ice cream cake. ^^

Okay, so now for the trip update. This morning I had to get up at seven something to get ready for the trip to Heidelberg. I was exhausted and moving very slowly-- it wa so cold. I wish I could turn a heater on somewhere in the mornings, just so I can warm up a little. I had more bread, butter, and honey this morning. Drank some water... Had Sarah loan me out some of the money she accidentallly withdrew when we got here. I now owe her 100 euro, or the american dollar equivalent. =)

Opa drove us to the train station in Sussen, and we went to our platform to wait for our train to arrive. And once again I was amazed to see an advertisement that I was going to keep quiet about--- all over Germany there are these billboards displaying vegetables with condoms on them. It's very odd- and something that you definitely would not see in America-- but they are part of a national campaign to get the message out about safe sex and AIDS prevention. It's rather comical to see, but the first day I saw them I was very weirded out. I just wanted to mention that... even if it is somewhat unappropriate. The level of censhorship is very low here. It's kind of funny that way.

Rothenburg!

  • Aug. 2nd, 2007 at 5:09 PM

I woke up with a start this morning, which was appropriate due to the sudden appearance of a storm. The thunder clapped maliciously- and I had no choice but to open my weary eyes- a headache throbbing in my temple from the alcohol last night. Man I was nearly (hehe) wasted. I hardly know what I wrote in my blog!

It is near midnight right now, and I need to hurry so that I can get to bed. We are getting up early tomorrow morning to travel to Heidelberg. We will be meeting Sarah’s friend Ben at the train station. I also wanted to tip you all off that I updated my Ulm post with pictures finally. By Saturday I should have everything caught up again. It’s just been sort of hectic trying to play catch up- So many things have been happening! But there will be pictures soon. =)

This morning I decided to get up, but then I went back to bed for an hour-- which confused the girls, I think. So, after another hour of snoozing, I got up and joined my friends downstairs for breakfast- a roll with butter and honey. Today was Walter's birthday, so I was trying to think of what to do for him, even though I havent known him for very long. Luckily an opportunity presented itself.

Dead laptop and German Versailles

  • Jul. 31st, 2007 at 6:08 AM

Well, there has been no luck in fixing my laptop situation. The power cord is no longer charging the batteries, and so I am without a laptop...which means no pictures for awhile. Tomorrow Peter (Sarah's uncle) is going to bring his two power chargers though, and one of them should work. Maybe he'll leave us one, and then we can continue with the pictures. As it is, I am on Opa's computer, and it is very hard to type on. The letters are all mixed up, and the punctuation is a bit strange, so forgive me if this seems a little off.  I am so wanting a Mac right now.

Ulm! Pictures are here. =)

  • Jul. 30th, 2007 at 4:11 PM

This morning I had toast with honey and butter for breakfast. I am ashamed to say that I have never tried this at home, but it has quickly become a new favorite. Katharina (revised spelling today) and Sharon had honey nut cherios. Mexican dominos last night was a lot of fun, but it really put me behind in my blogging. It takes me a couple of hours to do all of this, you know =P. I ended up awake until 1:30 in the morning. Luckily, during the game, I was able to ask about the fairy tale character in the woods, and actually found out it’s the figure of a local ghost story. Oma told me all about it, as well as some other interesting things about the mountain. I will retell both tales probably on Wednesday- when I have time. I want to actually make the ghost story into a story… so it may take some time =). It’s been getting a little busy here… and I’ve been taking a lot of pictures.

Castles, eh?

  • Jul. 29th, 2007 at 3:54 PM

This morning I slept in while Oma, Opa, Sarah, and Susan went to attend mass. I didn’t feel comfortable with tagging along to a church where I couldn’t understand the language, or to attend a ceremony that is not part of my own faith. I am trying to understand a little about Catholicism, though. Anyways, I slept reasonably well. For a long time… and then I snuck past the little ones’ door downstairs to go and take a shower. I didn’t want to be caught and asked to draw more pictures for them.

Pretzels in the morning.

  • Jul. 28th, 2007 at 3:33 PM

So I survived my first night! I slept very soundly, despite the random fireworks being set off in the street, and I don’t remember dreaming at all. I finally got what I’ve been waiting for these past three weeks, so I no longer have to stress about that issue. =) And I’m happy about it, as long as my cramping doesn’t start up too bad—but I have hydrocodone. Hehe. Thank you everyone at the office =D

Missing you in the U.S.

  • Jul. 27th, 2007 at 2:46 PM

We arrived in Germany at 2:00 local time, and I must say that the weather and scenery are gorgeous (unlike soggy texas!). I met Sarah's grandparents and her aunt and cousins at the airport, and I like them very much. They are a very nice family, and I couldn't have hoped for better hosts here. The food is amazing-
